December F A V O R I A T E S ! and small update

1. Lustrasilk Mango Butter
At first I did not like this stuff. But that was before I realized that I needed to use a product a few times before I rated it from 1-10. I use this stuff briefly after I rinse out my Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor and I also mix it into my DC's. It makes my hair super soft and I now know the hype about it. The next time I go to the store I'll get 2 tubs of it to make sure I don't run out.

2. Silk Elements Megasilk Olive Moisturizing Treatment
My mom bought this and called it 'A no-name brand deep conditioner with olive oil in it' on a car ride home. Little did I know she actually got something really good. I mix this into my DC. I use this and my hair is always soft afterwards. Since I ran out of the intense conditioning mayonnaise this will be a great replacement. (Maybe better)

I know for a fact that by the end of January I will be shoulder length. I can't wait for it. My hair has grown a lot and it's only the beginning. Besides that I love how soft my hair is lately. As far as the bunning challenge goes I'm not sure if I like it or not. It may be protecting my ends, but I really don't like the way I look with a bun. I won't have to do this for much longer anyways thank God. When I do reach full SL I'll experiment with better looking buns and hopefully I'll get into protective styles more but I'm not making any promises.

My Winter Break Self-Challenge! and Protective Styles VS Low Manipulation Styles

Today is the first day of winter break for my school so I decided to do a small challenge with myself to better protect my hair. The challenge is very simple: always wear a protective style. My styles of choice are buns and having my hair wrapped. (I know wrapping my hair isn't a 'style', but that is how it will be when I am at home. The ends are still protected)

Protective styles are important because they protect your ends. Because the ends of your hair are the oldest, they want to break off. If you continue to have your ends break off then you will never see any added length. Protective styles do not make your hair grow, they just prevent breakage. They also help because your ends are protected from the elements. (Wind, Snow, Rain, Sun, Ect.) Some protective styles include:
Weaves (not glue-in)
cornrows
buns
chignons
wigs
french braids
up-dos
bantu knots (while still knotted-not a bantu knot OUT)

Low Manipulation styles are styles that use no direct heat.(blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron). These are good because since heat is obviously bad for your hair, they use no heat. They also are good because you do not have to comb your hair or at least not as often. These include
braid outs
bantu knot outs
roller sets
pin curls
flexi rods

Some people would argue that because my hair is 'only neck length' that I do not need to wear protective styles because my ends are not brushing against my clothing like people with shoulder length hair and beyond. Well I think it is still important because
1. My hair does brush against my clothing. (a tiny bit, but it still counts)
2. my hair still needs to be protected from the elements

CHALLENGE RULES:
UNTIL JANUARY 3RD 2011, I WILL WEAR MY HAIR IN SOME FORM OF A PROTECTIVE STYLE NO MATTER WHERE I AM.

*This may not be a 'challange' to some people, but I always wear my hair down so for me this will be something challenging.
*Today is a wash day

super late hair update pic...oops. :)

11/08/10
So i took this picture on 12/9/10. it doesn't look like much growth from the last picture I took but when I brush it to the front it looks a lot longer than it did before. I think some of it had to do with the relaxer getting rid of my shrinkage. I believe I will definitely be full shoulder length by February 2011. I went to the salon to get my relaxer but this time I don't know what kind of relaxer she used. All I know is that it was in a white bottle with pink writing. I really liked the relaxer because it didn't burn and it made my NG lay down extra flat.

Friday I washed my hair:
Pre-pooed for 30 minutes with Pantene curly hair series DC. I really liked it.
Aphogee shampoo- 1 wash
Aphogee 2 min recon. (i used it as a regular rinse-out conditioner and didn't leave it in for two minutes or put on a plastic cap)
lustrasilk shea butter and mango- 2-3 minutes
Then I DC'd for about 2 hours:
lustrasilk mango butter
Silk elements mega silk olive oil moisturizing treatment (NEW)
SE intense conditioning mayo
fantasia frizz buster
Eucalyptus oil
coconut oil
When I DC I put saran wrap around my hair then put on a plastic cap. Then I sit under the dryer for the last 20 minutes.

The newest thing that i have bought for my hair is One n Only argan oil. I've been wanting to try argan/morrocan oil on my hair since omgitsvictoriaXD (youtube) said she used it on her hair and liked it. I used it last night as a sealant and liked it, but i want to try it more before I give a full review on it.

HJ- update

So I finally made an appointment to get my hair done next Tuesday. My plan to get a relaxer every 8 weeks has failed because instead of eight, now I have accidentally stretched for almost 10 and by the time i get my relaxer it'll almost be 12. So I proved that I can actually stretch longer than 8 weeks, but I just don't want to because, well.. IDK. Its just my choice not to. And because I thought I was going to get a relaxer 2 weeks ago, I haven't been washing my hair because I didn't want to be scratching and rubbing my hair too much while washing it. I did that the last time i washed my hair and it burned like crazy. It could've been the type of relaxer (Silk Elements) or that i washed my hair or a mixture of the both.

Because my hair doesn't have a lot of NG, i feel like i failed a little bit. I thought I would have a lot of NG but i really dont, less than a 1/2 inch. If you saw my last length pictures, you would've noticed that my hair didn't grow that much. :( That's kind of sad. I don't want to start co-washing because I'm not great at doing heat less styles. My bantu knot outs have been getting worse and worse. And when I do a bantu knot out I always do it on flat ironed hair. And when I air dry over night, i do plaits then take them out in the morning. My hair doesn't look good at all after that. The curls aren't defined and my hair gets super frizzy. Next time I air dry over night I will M&S then use my frizz buster.

Aphogee:
I still like aphogee. One time I used it it made my hair hard. The time after that I pre-pooed, then I washed with Aphogee shampoo and conditioned with Aphogee 2 minute and Silk Elements moisturizing conditioner. After that I DC'd for a couple of hours. (the first time I DC'd for more than 1 hour! turned out great!) After I rinsed my hair felt super soft. I went to sleep woke up and my hair felt hard again! -_- So I DC'd AGAIN and my hair has felt soft ever since. So that means one of two things:
-I need to DC for a supppperrrr long time once
-or use Aphogee shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner, or Moisturizing shampoo and aphogee 2 min (i think i said that in a past post..)
Or it could just mean that I should only use it every now and then. I'm not sure.

Pre Poo:
As I mentioned before I tried to do a pre-poo. To keep it short it went terrible. I used
honey
olive oil
jojoba oil
and Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner.
I think it was the hello hydration. Next time I'm going to be using Pantene Curly Hair Series Deep Moisturizing Treatment. I decided to get this because I really liked the Shampoo and Conditioner. Also I figured black hair is naturally curly and because this is extra moisturizing.

Jojoba Oil:
I got jojoba oil because my hair really liked Pantene relaxed and natural daily moisturizer which had jojoba oil in it. (i stopped using it b/c it had mineral oil in it). When I used this to seal it didn't do anything but sit on my hair.

Wave Nouveau Finishing Lotion:
Hate it. It just sits on my hair and weighs it down. Never again. I added Jojoba oil into to hopefully water it down and also as an attempt to get rid of the oil. LOL. but now I've decided to just put it in the bathroom and hope that my mom and sister will use it. I hope it works well for their hair.

Petroleum and Mineral Oil for hair

Petroleum (aka petrolatum, petroleum jelly, soft paraffin, white paraffin, and mineral oil) is a common ingredient for black hair care. I bet if you check the ingredients on your tub of blue magic, petroleum is the first ingredient- meaning it is the number one ingredient. For many years (centuries even) its been used as a hair moisturizer. When in fact, it only coats the hair instead of penetrating it. Mineral oil basically coats the hair not allowing the moisture to penetrate. Hair that has no moisture is more likely to frizz (which is not cute!).
Also, these products clog the pores of the hair shaft. So whether you spend $3.99 on a hair product with soft paraffin, or a $59.99 product with petrolatum in it, you're most likely wasting your money.

The reason these products and their AKA's are so widely used in black hair care products is:
a) they are cheap
b) they give our hair an artificial shine

This is why on your hair journey it is important to check the ingredients to make sure they do not contain these products.

Other ingredients to avoid:
Propylene Glycol (PG): not exactly sure, I just know its bad :)
Isopropyl Alcohol: drying
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): strips of moisture
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)/ Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), TEA lauryl : cheap, stripping, irritating
Diethanolamine (DEA), Momoethnanolamine (MEA): can cause cancer (then again, what doesn't cause cancer in this world?)
Silicones: builds up, other bad stuff..

Personally, i just make sure it doesn't have any petroleum or mineral oil in it.

Essential Oils vs. Carrier Oils

Essential Oil:
-concentrated
-more expensive
-extremely strong smell (potent)
-should not be applied directly to the skin (should be diluted with a carrier oil)
-smaller bottles
-found in bark, roots, leaves or other aromatic parts of a plant
-does not spoil (but can lose their therapeutic qualities)
-should not be used to moisturize and seal with out being diluted by a carrier oil
examples: peppermint, clove, eucalyptus, citrus, etc.

Carrier Oil
-vegetable oil
-comes from the fatty portion of a plant- usually the kernels, seeds or nuts
-light smell (if any) (if a carrier oil has a strong smell, it most likely has gone bad)
-can spoil
-often used in health and beauty products
-can used to moisturize and seal
-cheaper
examples: sweet almond oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil

Massaging hair benefits

If you're not looking to start a whole new regimen and spend a lot of money but you want your hair to grow, there are small things you can do to stimulate growth. One thing is to massage your hair when you have shampoo or conditioner in your hair or randomly throughout the day. If done correctly, scalp massages will increase blood circulation to your hair and boost the strength of your roots. Scalp massages help prevent avoidable hair loss and will also make you feel serene and calm.

How to give a scalp massage:

First choose an oil: almond, sesame, lavender oil, peppermint, rosemary- all good choices for a proper scalp massage
Don't use too much of an essential oil. only add a maximum of two drops essential oil for every tablespoon of the oil that you are using (olive oil or almond oil, etc.)
Brush your hair thoroughly to get rid of the flaky dandruff in your hair. you'll want to flip your hair upside down and start from ends to tips. (if you have long hair)
Dip your fingers into the oil that you are using
Use your fingers to apply gentle pressure at the base of the neck, then move towards the hair line
Make sure to start slow, then speed up
Rake your fingers through the hair, then wrap a moist and warm towel around their hair

hmm... is aphogee too much protein for my hair? Protein-Moisture education

So earlier i wrote a blog entry about how much i LOVED aphogee. that was about two days after i used it and before i unwrapped my hair this morning. I unwrapped my and was about to moisturize and seal my hair and for the first time today i felt it. My hair was super hard. :( It doesn't feel good at all so right now I have DC in my hair with a plastic cap on. i don't know how to describe it. My hair didn't have that flow and was hard to bend and when i put moisturizer in it it didn't do ANYTHING! So I decided to do a late night DC before I go to bed. I want to leave it in for a LONG time to make sure my hair feels better by the time i go to bed. So the next time i use aphogee, I'll use the Silk Elements shampoo and the 2 minute recon. or I'll use the aphogee shampoo and silk elements conditioner to hopefully balance out the protein-moisture to make sure this tragedy doesn't happen again. (when i run out of SE, I got my eye on elasta qp stuff!)

Protein:
Protein is used to give structure, build strength and give structure to hair. If protein is used correctly, it will leave hair soft, full, smooth and healthy. Because I have relaxed hair, i need more protein than people with natural hair. (also, people with color-treated hair need more protein as well) When your hair has too much protein, it can cause problems. your hair will start to:
feel dry
look frizzy
feel like straw
easily tangles
breaks easily with little tension or stress
stiff
lacks elasticity

Moisture:
Moisture and black hair just go together. Like spaghetti and meat sauce, Bert and Ernie, french fries and ketchup. Because black hair is likely to be porous,  moisture easily passes through the cuticle layer of the hair this loss of moisture causes black hair to be dry which means we need to moisturize it a lot more often compared to people of European decent. This is why it is important to moisturize and seal every night if you want to grow your hair. If used correctly, moisture will make your hair soft and increase elasticity. However, if you use too much your hair:
will become 'mushy' or 'soggy' (especially when wet)
weak
limp

This is why a strong moisture-protein balance is needed to make sure your hair is growing and healthy.

3 month length check, haul, reviews

hair as of 10/08/2010

hair growth as of 11/08/10
about to take a shower to wash my hair
this is my 'new' hair growth. honestly, my hair doesn't look any longer than it did last month. but i will say that my ends look a lot better and I haven't even cut them yet.

HAUL:
this week i got anxious and got the aphogee stuff any ways with out waiting to run out of the SE stuff. I got:

-Aphogee Shampoo for damaged hair
-Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor
(already had the Aphogee green tea and keratin reconstructorizer)
*and the non-aphogee stuff
-lustrasilk Shea butter mango cholesterol plus
(all costing $16.42 at my local beauty supply store)

REVIEWS:
A. Shampoo:
LOVE IT! its the first shampoo that made my hair feel this soft at home. I only did one wash because that's what the bottle says to do b/c it has so much protein in it. Next time i might do 1 1/2 wash. (just using a small amount of shampoo for the second wash) I like this shampoo because my hair feels clean afterwards, but doesn't feel stripped of moisture or super dry.
A. 2 minute:
I love this too! it made my hair feel softer! I wasn't sure what a 'reconsturctor' was, but its basically the conditioner that goes along with the shampoo. I put a lot of it in my hair, massaged it in then put my plastic cap on for 2 minutes. When it was rinsed out it felt super soft!
Lustrasilk Mango:
eh.. extremely disappointing. I used this as a DC (with out any oils added to it), and it took away all the softness the aphogee products gave me. I got this because I heard a lot of people using it and loving it. Also, its featured on hairlista's top 10 must have beauty products. I got it but it wasn't as wonderful as i hoped. I didn't use any oils or conditioners mixed into it but i will the next time and hope for the best.

I'm loving aphogee so much, I'm thinkin about getting the aphogee  pro-vitamin leave in conditioner too!
I also want to try ORS replenishing pak. (i already tried this before- before i started my hair journey- and i think i liked it but I'm not sure)

Next Friday i'll be the 8 weeks post and I'm excited to get my relaxer! my NG is out of control and it needs to be tamed. lol. If i could find a way to make my NG lay down flatter, then i would stretch for longer but since i can't i won't. I'm supposed to get a relaxer next Friday, but since I have to work I'll get it done on that Saturday after I get off.  :)

Problem with Aphogee:
The future problems I see with aphogee are:
Aphogee is high protein:
A lot of people had to eventually stop using aphogee because it has such a high protein content. Protein will dry out your hair and make it hard if you don't use a good enough moisture-protein balance. (to be explained in a later post) I do a lot of things to my hair that adds moisture (DC, M&S, leave ins, etc). But still fear that it will be too much protein. But if it is, I can use a moisturizing shampoo/ conditioner every now and then to make sure it doesn't happen. (aphogee already makes one just for this occasion.)
Aphogee is for 'damaged hair':
Aphogee is specifically for 'damaged hair'. what happens when my hair isn't damaged any more? What products will i switch too after that? I don't want to rely on aphogee to always make my hair great because one day it won't be necessary. Everybody I watch on YouTube eventually switched off of aphogee to different products. (Ateyaaa switched to NuGro, omgitsvictoriaxd switched to Garnier Fructis then to Aussie, etc.) Does it matter if its for damaged hair or healthy hair?

Short term hair goal:
by the end of the year I hope to be full shoulder length. At the latest, by 1/31/2011 to be full SL.
Long term hair goal:
bra strap length by December 2011.

1 month since I've gotten my relaxer

It's one month since i've gotten my relaxer and i really don't feel like i need another one. I used to think I needed to get it every six weeks but my roots are still manageable. I might stretch for 10 weeks or longer because I don't think I need it all he time like i used to get them. I remeber last year I got a relaxer and some girl told me 'You shouldn't have got it, you didn't need it.' and I said 'Yes I did, it's been six weeks.' lol. Just shows how much I didn't know at that time.

And I was thinking that when I run out of my Silk Elements I'll use a Aphogee regimen. I want to switch b/c SE is only availble at Sally's and Sally's is no where near my house. And I'm not going to continue to pay $5 shipping and waiting 5-11 business days for my products to get in the mail. Aphogee is sold in a store right across the street from my school so i can get that anytime i want.

With aphogee, I heard that you have to watch out for your hair drying out because its a lot of protein in it.
I moisturize and seal every night so i shouldn't have a problem with that and i DC every time i wash. But if i do have problems with dryness I could always use a moisture based shampoo every now and then and I'll be fine. But its only a thought and I'm not sure if i want to actually use it.

How To Remove Acrylic Nails Easily and Pain Free

I recently took off my acrylic nails. I took them off in a painless way that took me only about 15-20 minutes for both of my hands. This is what I did:

Supplies:
-Acetone
-bowl
-cotton ball
-water
-Sandwich bag

Technique:
-Fill the bowl about 1/2 way with water
-put the water in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.
-pour about 1/4 cup of acetone into the plastic bag
-place the bag into the hot water
-stick your hand into the plastic bag and wait about 5 minutes.
-take your hand out of the bag and use the cotton ball to remove the acrylic nail. you may also have to wiggle the nail off.

HJ- fish oil, DC's, and roller sets. :)

3 weeks ago i told you that i will not be buying hair products for three weeks because I don't want to become a product junkie. Well, that three weeks is up. :) now I can buy products but I don't really have my eye on anything at the moment. I think my regimen is fine as it is and doesn't need any thing new. (well, I'm almost out of my DC, but I'll climb that hill when i get to it.)The only thing I really want at this point is fish oil pills. Fish oil is supposed to help with a lot of things. (more details below)
Yesterday I DC'd my hair (no shampoo) for about two hours. ( I used to keep track of what I put in my DC's, but now I just put a hojpoj of things in there. I normally just put the stuff on my hair, but yesterday I applied similar to a relaxer and it worked much better. I'm not sure if its how I applied it or what I used to make my hair feel that way though. Then my mom roller setted it. (tools used: clips, rollers, triangle hair net, hooded dryer) When I took it out, It looked..eh. not great like i hoped. But i won't give up because it defiantly had potential to be better. Then I woke up and flat ironed it. :\

Fish Oil Benefits:
hair
-promote faster hair growth
-nourishes hair follicles
-rich in protein which contributes to healthy hair
-improves texture, makes it softer
-improves density, makes it thicker
-adds moisture
-maintains a healthy shine and luster
skin
-makes skin smoother (Gets rid of acne)
other
-brain health
-joint health
-cardiovascular health
-makes nails harder

Of course, instead of taking dietary supplements, you could simply eat more fish or increase your Omega 3 intake- but i don't like fish that much so I'll choose to take the supplements instead.

HJ- coconut oil

Coconut oil is good. I like it. It moisturizes my hair nice. But idt it really penetrates my hair very well. It just kind of sits on there like a hair grease does. even by morning time it looks shiny b/c its 'greasy'- not a shine that healthy hair has. which is weird b/c coconut oil is supposed to be one of the oils that actually penetrate hair the most. They say that coconut oil penetrate hair about 90-95% so idk why my hair looks that way when i use it. maybe i use too much. hmm... idk.

skin.. and Boots Botanics (bb) rosewater toner review

Boots Botanics is back in stock at target but i'm ify on weather or not i should buy it b/c:
1. i tried BB toner and it might've broken me out worse
2. its 8.99 for a really small bottle (expensive!)
3. a few people say its watery.

but a lot of people say it work really well so i really want to try it, maybe next pay check. now i got my eye on my old fav facewash (clean and clear blackhead eraser scrub), and clearasil stayclear pore cleanser.
I've never tried the clearasil one but i read a lot of reviews and most people liked it.

but still, a lot of people said they really like the BB one, i still want to try it.

REVIEW: Boots Botanics Organic Rosewater Toner- $7
Last week i used BB organic rosewater toner after i washed and before i moisturized. (CTM- cleanse tone moisturize) I liked the way it made my face feel- soft and clean. I used it for a few nights then i noticed all of a sudden i've been breaking out terribly along my chin and cheek area. (i stopped using biotin and haven't used any other pills). I want to clear my skin and then figure out if it was actually the toner- b/c i paid $7 for it and i want my money's worth.

HJ- hair update

09/08/2010

10/08/2010

See? a lil bit of progress so far! and the only real difference i've made is:

-Moisturizing and sealing everynight (well, most nights)

-washing more often

-and the products i use.

I know somebody is probably looking at this like 'thats not much growth', but its my hair and i'm proud of my progress so far. I don't plan on being this length for too long.

HJ and maybe a skin journey too? hmm...

Hair Journal:
I continue using the HBHO- now I use it as a sealant as well as a HOT and in DC's. It actually makes my hair really soft. I also love it because it doesn't weigh down my hair.

Skin:
basically, I've had acne since 4th grade. I haven't really gotten into trying to get rid of it since 8th grade. What really worked for me at one point was stridex, but its so hard to find that i can't use it. So then i started using clean and clear products, and they were good but they never completely got rid of it, some but not all. Now I'm using an olay cleaner and i don't really like it. So I'm going to try clean and clear again. Right now all I'm doing is cleaning and moisturizing, although i know i should use a toner. I can't find one that has consistently good reviews though. (I only use drugstore brands) And lately I've been wanting to use get a facial (one i could do at home) or a face mask.

So trying not to buy hair products have been easy b/c I've been so focused on my skin. I found something I'm interested in (Boots Botanicals at target), but its out of stock so I'll have to wait for it to come back.

And now that Sephora is coming to my local JC Penny's, hopefully I'll find some high-quality cheap stuff there.

IDK if i really want to start a 'skin journey', but i know that I'm going to have to change to some things if i want an improvement.
What I want to get is:
A good toner
a good mask/facial that i could do at home
find ingredients to avoid in skin care.

Biotin for Skin

I've been using biotin for my nails to be stronger and also for my hair to be stronger. I also thought my skin would clear up a bit. However, when i started taking biotin, i didn't notice any difference in my hair or nails, but i did notice my skin became WORSE! And i mean my skin looks terrible right now. (that's why my skin looks so bad in my pictures in my last blog) If you look up what biotin is supposed to do for skin, a lot of different websites say its supposed to help skin. If you look up people's experiences with biotin, a lot of them will say it broke them out. I don't have sensitive skin it doesn't break out easily even though I've tried a lot of different products. Now my skin is terrible.    -_-
So Instead of continuing biotin pills, I'll just use 'Hair, Skin and Nails' pills. (although they do contain biotin, they also have a lot of other vitamins and minerals)

Biotin may work for nails and hair, but I'm not going to continue to use it to find out.

HJ- FINALLY got my relaxer todayy! And SALONS DON'T MAKE YOUR HAIR HEALTHY!

AHHH! i finally got my relaxer today! yayyy! i got there at about 4 and ain't leave until 9:30. but it was worth it b/c my hair is cute! I even used a silk elements relaxer so its like i'm still on the Silk Elements regimen when I go to the salon. (SEMS relaxer w/ shea butter in normal- brown tub) My hair is super soft and 'like silk'- but i don't think I would use that relaxer at home b/c it BURNS so bad. I didn't itch my too much for it to burn that bad. but 8/10 times i go to the salon for relaxers any ways so its not that big of a deal. I just got a trim and a simple wrap- I used to get detailed styles but then I figured out that wraps are easy to take care of b/c all you have to do is wrap it at night and it'll look good. But styles with twists and curls and lots of hair spray don't last as long when you go to sleep. Now its time for an 8 week stretch! And I said before that I thought my hair grew, after the trim its about the same length but thats okay b/c it'll benefit me in the long run!

P I C T U R E S ! :

look at them roots! lol

cute lil flip!
Salons Don't Make Your Hair Healthy (well, not all of them):

All of the salons I've been to (including the one that did my relaxer) focus mainly on looking nice instead of healthy hair. Like I've never been to a hair salon and the stylist used a heat protectant. And they use a lot of gel in the hair that can eventually break it off. (another reason why I only get wraps) Just b/c you come in with broken off hair and leave with it looking shiny and what-not doesn't mean your hair is healthy. They just are trained to make it look that way. So if you come in with unhealthy hair, you're still leaving with unhealthy hair. It just looks better.  (if you put a dress on a pig, its still a pig). I used to think going to the salon would make my hair healthy, but the only way to know for sure that your hair is at its peak health is if you take good care of it at home as well. Not that salon is a terrible place, but it definantly isn't want you want to rely on to make sure your hair is healthy.  I'm not saying that all salons are aimed for looks instead of heath, b/c i haven't been to all of the salons. But out of the ones i've been too, this is what I think.

-I'm still going to MS my hair, but i'm going to use very little SAO (b/c its a light oil) and use very little moisturizer (HE LTR).
-SEMS- silk elements mega silk
-SAO- sweet almond oil
-HE LTR- Herbal Essences long term relationship leave in conditioner

blood drive -_-

i said in my blog that i wrote earlier today that i was giving blood.

Didn't happen.

I went through everything- they even pricked my finger to find out my iron level. (that hurt!) and so when it was time to actually give blood, they couldn't find a vein to stick the needle in so they told me 'well, i guess we're going to call it a day. ugh. annoying. but i still got cookies and  a t-shirt so i guess that makes me a lil happy. Some people might say 'its the thought that counts', but not really when you're trying to save 3 lives.

HJ- Afrca's Best Herbal Oil♥

Yesterday I bought ABHO.
Today I tried Africa's Best Herbal Oil. I used it as a HOT and mixed it into my DC when I washed my hair.  This stuff is great. I really like it b/c it made my hair super soft after the HOT and after the DC. The last time i used a HOT in my DC (Hask), it was okay compared to what this did. I will definitely be buying this again.
-I still haven't gotten my hair relaxed b/c nobody wants to take walk ins so i have to make an appointment for Friday. -_-
-I've started my 3 weeks of not buying any more products. (Ends October 14). (unless i run out of something). I still want to try roller sets. (I can get those b/c its not a 'product', more of a 'styling tool')
-today I'm giving blood to the red cross..I'm SOOO terrified of needles. *crossing my fingers* i hope this goes well. pray for me. :)
-I'm thinking of starting a reg that makes me wash my hair every 4 days. alternating shampoo washing and co-washing. I just have to get a good conditioner to co-wash with. But that won't be until I can buy more products. (3 weeks)

'Growing' hair vs 'Retaining Length'

A lot of people go on hair journeys to 'grow' their hair. When actually, your hair is always growing. About 1/2 inch a month on average. What these people mean to say is that they want their hair to retain length.

Explanation:
Your hair is always growing. Its inevitable. But, if your ends are constantly breaking off, you won't see any added length. So if your hair is growing at a rate of 1/2 inch a month, but is also breaking off 1/2 inch a month, it'll always look the same length.
Think about it: you relax your new growth right? If you have new growth, then your hair grew, right? But your hair isn't looking any longer b/c it keeps breaking off.

So what you actually want to happen is to retain length. Meaning you want to keep the ends healthy. So when you M&S your hair, pay extra attention to your ends. Also, when you notice split ends, CUT THEM! you don't want to hold on to dead hair. If your hair is growing 1/2 inch a month, and splitting 1/2 a month, you'll notice growth, but it'll look gross. and split hair is weak hair that breaks off. Eventually that weak hair is going to break off any ways so you want to cut your hair doesn't look choppy.

HJ, random thoughts, oil facts :)

Soo... I bought the coconut oil at GNC for about $8 yesterday. I forgot how much i hate coconuts and their smell though. lol. my hair isn't much different from not using it. I hate getting all excited to use something new and then its just okay. The same thing happened with the silk elements and stuff. But I want to try the Pantene Conditoner once i finsh the SE one b/c it worked so well last time. And I also want to get either Hot Six Oil or Africas best Herbal Oil. It doesn't matter which one (whatevers cheaper). I like the ingredients b/c they both have alot of oils that are good for hair and no 'bad' ingredients. (besides fragrance) I don't want to use them to MS my hair, more just to use for HOT and to mix into DC.

-Ik its a lil soon (10 days), but i think my hair has grown a little. :)
-I'm thinking of getting Pantene daily oil cream moisturizer again. the reason i stopped using it in the first place was b/c it has mineral oil in it, but it works great for my hair so i might get it again anyways
-I decided not to buy any products for 3 weeks after I get the herbal oil or hot six oil. I want to see how the products i already have work and stop buying so many products so i won't become a product junky.
-i won't take pics of my hair growth until atleast 10/8/10. that'll be exactly 1 month from my last pic. I'll take pics in 1 month increments so I'll see the difference.

H A I R  G O A L S: to be completed by December '10.
-lower manipulation- touching, twirling, smoothing, brushing/combing unnecessicarily.
-Find a regimen that works- I'm already started on this process, but ugh its taking such a long time and i hate wasting money on stuff that is okay/doesn't work at all.
-Find heatless hairstyles that work/ Lower heat styles- I've tried bantu knots, they work okay but i have to flat iron it a lil bit b/c i think it works better. I've also tried braid outs before, it turned out okay but i want it to look better. Next time i do it i'll make the braids bigger so I can get bigger, waves instead of little ones. Eventually I hope to lower my heat styles to 0-3 times a month.
-Learn to Roller set-  roller sets are so pretty to me, I hope I can learn to do them and they'll look nice. What I don't like about them is that their so time consuming.
-Get Castor Oil- When my 3 weeks is up of course. :) (read why below)

Oils: How and Why I choose them:
How I choose my oils:
-figure out what I want my hair to do (longer, stronger, thicker, moisturized, ect.)
-find a oil that does that by googling it and looking at numerous websites that talk about an oil
-once I find an oil i'm interested in, I look for personal reviews and experiences with that oil.
example- I looked up SAO and websites said a lot of great things about it, and i read a lot of personal reviews and a lot of people liked it so i bought it, but when I looked up grapeseed oil, a lot of websites said a lot of great things about it, but personal reviews said it didn't penetrate the hair very well so i decided not to get it.

Why I chose my oils (what they do):

-Sweet Almond Oil:
-nourishes hair and smooths hair cuticle
-makes hair long, strong and thick
-adds shine
-no smell

-Jojoba Oil (ho-ho-bah):
-moisturizes the scalp
-non-greasy
-develops new hair cell growth
-antibacterial
-prevents hair from being brittle and dull
-no smell

Coconut Oil:
-growth
-shine
-gets rid of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs
-provides essential proteins
-controls frizz
-no more hygral fatigue (hygral fatigue: Damage due to swelling and contraction of the hair during the uptake and loss of water. Swelling and de-swelling of hair is one of the causes of hair damage.- more info on hairlista.com)

Castor Oil:
*I don't have this oil yet, but i hear so many good things about it and I really like what I hear.
-moisturizes scalp
-promotes hair growth and thickness
-reduce and prevents damage
-soft and shiny hair

Purpose of DC/Mixing DC:

Purpose:
Deep conditioning affects the outer layer which is called the cuticle. The cuticle resembles shingles on a roof. They overlap each other, and should lay down flat. When your hair becomes dry and damaged, these shingles will stand up away from the hair shaft. This is what gives hair the dull, frizzy look. Deep conditioning the proper way and with the right products will help to smooth the cuticle, making the shingles lay down again, giving your hair a smoother, shinier, healthier appearance. (according to http://www.essortment.com/all/deepcondtionyo_rlhp.htm)

Why I mix:
The first time I saw someone mixing their deep conditioners was ulovemegz on youtube. I thought It was a genius idea that she came up with herself. Then i started using hairlista.com and realized that for people with healthier hair, its more common to mix your conditioners with other things than not to. I mixed my conditioners for the first time last week and compared to not mixing it, it worked A LOT better. my hair was super soft and moisturized compared to not mixing.
--random: I like to mix my HOT into the DC, but you don't really need a lot of it b/c it'll make the consistency of the DC runny. 1- 1/2 tbsp should be enough.

HJ- washed my hair

Today I decided to wash my hair again b/c lately I've been doing a lot of bantu knots in my hair (super cute!) and i use gel and hair spray to hold the curls through out the day. WELLL... that made my hair crunchy and stiff so i washed it today after school. (took me about 4 hours! -_- ) And I did the DC with the HOT mixed in and it worked GREAT! my hair is a lot softer than it was the last time i washed it and it looks great too.

WHAT I DID:
-HOT for about 15 minutes (a long time, huh?) w/ plastic cap on
-washed & conditioned hair as usual
-mixed a big glob of SE intense mayo, 2 squirts of Aussie 3 minute miracle, 8 drops of jojoba oil, and the rest of my HOT (which was still warm)(about 1/3 of the bottle)
-put the plastic cap on, left it on for 30-40 minutes, then sat under the dryer for 15-20 minutes. (I hate sitting under the dryer for more than 20 minutes, its soooo boring!)
-rinsed, and continued as normal

My hair is super soft and I will be doing this again and again for my later DC's. (But i still want a new conditioner though)

DC-  deep condition
HOT- hot oil treatment
SE- silk elements

Hair Journal- Hot Oil Treatments

I decided instead of pre-pooing my hair I would do a hot oil treatment. And I would save some of the hot oil (about 1/4) and mix it into my DC (along with other oils). That way my hair will be better moisturized and softer than it was the last time I washed my hair. I can't do that this weekend b/c I'm going to get a relaxer at the salon.(about 9 weeks post) So next week i'll do that and see how it goes.

When I do my HOT, i will apply 3/4 of the HOT in my hair as directed, then massage it into my scalp for 1 minute. (Leaving the remaining 1/4 in the hot water) After that I'll sit under the dryer for about ten minutes with a plastic cap on. Lastly I'll walk around the house w/ the shower cap on until my hair cools and wash as normal.

To mix the DC:
-take the Silk Elements Mega Silk Intense Conditioning Mayonnaise and put some into a butter tub.
-put the HOT into it.
-put other oils into it. (not sure which yet)
-mix and apply to hair
-sit under dryer for at least 30 minutes
-rinse out

Hair Journal- ORS Olive oil incredibly rich moisturizing lotion

not too long ago one of my family memebers relaxed their hair at home and used the ORS (organic root stimulator) relaxer. This relaxer comes with a lot of stuff in it including a moisutruizer. They didn't use the moisturizer so i decided to. I hated it. It was heavy and...idk it just felt weird on my hair. I know this was short but i had to say it.

Hair Journal- Silk Elements, bantu knots, Herbal Essences

So for the first time i tried the regimen I've been talking about for months and it was..eh. not great like i expected it to be. my hair didn't feel like 'silk' afterwards. not that my hair was rough. I just guess my expectations were too high. the pantene made my hair super soft, but this didn't. my hair was soft though. just not suppper soft like i wanted it to be. Also, it looks good. it still has a nice shine to it, but that could be b/c of the M&S that I do. All together it took about 3 hours.

However, I didn't mix anything with the oils that I use, next time i'll mix oils with the conditioner and DC and see if it makes a difference. I wanted to see how it worked straight before i started using a variation of it.
And i did notice that there was NO dandruff. but then again that could've been the M&S.

When i finished DC my hair I tried to do a bantu knot out and I hated it b/c it was frizzy, so i flat ironed it and it looked okay. Super flat with no volume. Then that night i re-bantu knotted it and it looked good in the morning, but the curls didn't last long at all so I went to target and got herbal essences totally twisted curl scrunching gel and the curls lasted all day and didn't frizz. :) I'm really starting to like herbal essences. (i'm hoping i dont jinx myself) When I first took out the bantu knot, it was  lil crunchy but through out the day the crunch went away. Not only that but it smells good and is alcohol-free!

PROS FOR THIS WEEK:
-The SE shampoo was good, it didn't dry out my hair like Dark and Lovely.
- I finally started the regimen I wanted to, even if their are some kinks
-The Wave Nouveau finsihing lotion is a really good moisturizer if i need a lot of moisture.
-I 'discovered' HE scrunching gel and bantu knot outs
-no dandurff
-hair is really moisturized (hallelujah!)
-none of the products stink
-exicted for a new oil (coconut)

CONS FOR THIS WEEK:
-I need a different regimen (specifically conditioner and maybe a different deep conditioner)
- I forgot to get SE megasilk moisture treatment. :( I really liked that stuff in the little packet.

RANDOM:
-after i buy the coconut oil i'm going to stop buying hair products for a while, i don't want to be a junky and waste money on products I won't use
-I won't use this method this week b/c i plan on going to the salon and getting a relaxer and to get my ends dusted, so i won't need to wash it.
-if i figure out cute styles w/o heat, then i'll bump up my reggie to once a week instead of every two weeks.
-I put the HE on the shaft of my hair, banut knotted it, then sprayed the knot with SE styling spritz, so that could've been the cause of the stiffness.

Hair Journal: Pantene Curly Hair Series- Dry to Moisturized Review.

A few weeks ago my mom signed up to recieve a freebie of pantene shampoo and conditioner in the mail. So we recieved a small sample sized and I used it to wash my hair once i took my braids out. It made my hair SUPER soft. But.. I did notice that I used the conditioner more than I used the shampoo. (I had my eyes closed and didn't realize I was using conditioner instead of a shampoo--so I conditioned my hair about 4 times and washed w/ shampoo twice)

-It did make my hair soft, but it didn't detangle at all.
-The smell was decent- it didn't stink, but it wasn't scented.
-I don't think theres any mineral oil in it.

On another note, I've decided to try coconut oil instead of jojoba oil. I think it'll help my hair just as well but its less expensive and you get more product. So I'll wait until I run out of jojoba oil until I get the coconut oil. (unless it goes on sale :) ) Another reason I want to try coconut oil is because it helps with dry hair. specifically dandruff. when I took out my braids I noticed A LOT  of dandruff. I don't see it any more now (weird) but it could've went away since I started moisturizing and sealing.

Also, I've tried moisturizing and sealing for the first time this week. I've noticed that my hair is a lot shiny-er even after doing it for only 1 night it was a lot shiny-er. It also feels soft but that could just be the shampoo and conditioner. When I run my fingers through my hair, my hands feel oily. not greasy and nasty though. I guess this is normal for M&S'd hair? And I don't understand people who can M&S their hair twice a day, If i did that then it would be sooo greasy-Mc-nasty. But i guess that's for people with thicker/longer hair.

I also learned this week that it is important to have a hair goal. I want to go as far as i can and still maintain it- hopefully bra strap length by Dec '11. (maybe that's wishful thinking, but I think I can do it)

And lastly, I learned that i don't have to get my hair trimmed every time i get a relaxer at the hair salon, just to 'listen' to my hair and wait until I need a trim or to get dusted.

Hair Journey- Post 1

I'm so excited to start my hair journey officially. Last week I took out my braids, washed it (not using the new regimen b/c i didnt get the products yet), but it still ended up looking nice and feeling soft. :) (I used Pantene curly hair series shampoo and conditioner).
However, last tuesday I did some online shopping and bought all of the things in the list in the other blog post with my regimen in it. It just came in the mail today. :) I opened all of the products and they didn't smell great--not that they stink, they just wasn't scented.

Two new things that I bought are:
-Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Leave-In Conditioner. (I use this to moisturize and seal)
-Tresseme Heat Protection Spray (Even though I haven't finished the Silk elements one yet.)

Lastly, this is my hair as of September 8, 2010:

I know my hair isn't super long, and the ends look terrible, and theres a piece sticking up, but that will soon change I hope. :)

SO happy for Sephora!

So, after watching countless youtube vidoes and hearing so much about how great Sephora is, I'm soo happy that my local JC Penny's is getting one. :)
a lot of people say its super expensive, but I went online and found that not everything is expensive. (most of it is, but not all of it.) I can't wait them to finish building it so i can look through the products and see what the hype is about.

deleted youtube videos..

I deleted my youtube videos b/c i wanted to do makeup videos and hair tutorials. BUT I can't do those b/c:
       1. I have braids and can't talk too much about hair except how to care for your braids.
       2. I need a better understanding of how to do makeup before I start telling other people how to do it. lol.
      3. I'm starting a hair journey as soon as I take out my braids and I am in no way an expert (yet) on hair and how to make it healthy or how to make it grow.

___________________________________________________________________________________

And I haven't been writing a lot b/c I was busy at work and stuff. And this week I've been sick. :( I'm feeling better today though.

Working at target is okay..I prefer being a waitress but I'll get over it.

youtube videos.. :(

I HATE making youtube videos because I always look gross on camera. I actually dont think i look that bad in pictures or in person, but on camera i always seem homely. :( I guess the more videos I make I'll learn how to look better. ? maybe. and my voice sounds extra deep. like, manly. I'm going to have to put more personality and not be so monotone in my next videos. lol.
see? normal!

Expect More, Pay Less.

ohmigawd!

I got the job at target! YAY! I've been looking for months- since October 4th so... about 9 months! (ever since I turned 16). It was real messed up how it went though so this is exactly what happened:

I got there about five minutes early (i wanted to be there about 10 minutes early but I was runnin a lil late). So I told the lady who looked official that I was ready to have my third interview. Her face immedeatly dropped and said that all the HR (head rescources) people LEFT FOR LUNCH and they'd be back in about an hour! What I did after that was walk around target moseying through the cosemtics and hair department until they figured out what they should do with me. My sister (who already works at target) talked to the lady and then they called the person who was supposed to be doing my interview.

About ten minutes later I was in some lady's office and she said 'This is your official job offer'. As much as I wanted to scream 'GIMMIE THE FRIGGIN JOB!', I said calmly 'Yes, I would like the job'. Now all I have to do is pass a drug test (that'll be easy) and they'll do a background check on me and I'll be the next target employee. yay!

after all of that my sister took me out to eat to at applebees!

Target

Soo.. today at exactly 5:18pm target called me and said that they wanted me to come in for a third interview. :) like i said last time if you get to the third interview then you got the job. :) :) but idk..i'm still a little bit scared and nervous. the interview is tomarrow at 1:30. So tomarrow I'll tell you if I got the job or not.  (even though I'm pretty sure I did!)

Rambling about my second work out week.

I really like this new exercise. The first time I did this I did the exercise wrong but yesterday I did it right. This week consists of dancing and still doing the yoga. My legs are kind of sore from the exercises like I didn't stretch well enough afterwards.

One exercise I am doing is pulling my left knee to my chest, then my right, then landing in a squat position. I really like it because It kind of gives me a cardio and leg work out in one move. It doesn't say how long to do this exercise but then I learned that you're supposed to do it for the length of one song then switch exercises for the next song. That doesn't work for me b/c I'm not ready to push myself that much yet. So what I do instead is do the squat-move for one verse of the song then the chorus then I switch moves. I'll keep updating about how its going.
DISCLAIMER:
These moves are from seventeen magazine-August 2010.

anxious for Senegalese Twists

I am so anxious to get these twists in my hair! I'm probably going to get them next friday or so but i want them NOW for so many reasons. Mostly b/c I'm sick of my hair. I'm really tired of wrapping it every night and not getting into the pool b/c it's going to frizz. I've had kinky twists before and I liked those but senegalese (sin-uh-gleese) are smaller and longer from the pictures I've seen. I would get kinky twists but their so thick that I couldn't do anything with them but wear them down all the time. I couldn't put them in a pony tail or anything so they were boring. But these seem thinner. I haven't seen them in person but I like what i've seen on youtube and pictures on the internet. IDK what color I want. I know i don't want my regular color-maybe a light brown with a burgandy undertone? I'm not sure. Once I get these braids out, then I'm going to start the new hair routine I mentioned in my other blog. (epiphanymagaline.blogspot.com) But that won't be for a couple of months. :)

NOTE: neither of these pictures are of me.
They are random examples that
I found on the internet.

My terrible interview :'( And how you can find yourself a J-O-B

Soo.. my interview was HORRIBLE! I was so nervous and I didnt smile the whole time. I think I gave bad answers and I lied through the whole thing.
I THOUGHT the interview was going to be more like 'So what makes you qualified for this position?' or 'Why do you want to work at target?'
But they asked me questions more like 'When was the last time you saw that someone needed help and you helped them?' and 'Explain a time when you worked in a group and accomplished your goal'. What kind of questions are those? I mean I understand that they would help the interviewer know what kind of worker I am but those types of questions I can't study for.
Also, they didnt even ask the 'strenghts and weekness' question. That was a standard question for all interviews. I guess not.

And my sister said that there are three interviews and if you make it to the third one then you're hired. I didnt make it to the third interview BUT the lady who does the third interview wasn't there today and the girl who did my interview said 'You should be hearing from us soon'. So I don't know what that means. I've been on one other interview and the lady said that to me and I didn't get the job so I'm SUPER scared. I've been trying to get a job since I first turned 16- 9 months ago. And so far I haven't gotten one. :(

****************************

But I'll help you find a job and hopefully you'll get it:

-Check out SimplyHired.com, type in 'keywords' and your location.
good key words are:
'team member'
'cashier'
'server'
'waitress'
and things like that

-Go to CraigsList.com and look for jobs there.

-When you get an interview, go to their website to figure out what the company needs exactly for the position you're interviewing for.

I N T E R V I E W * A T * T A R G E T ! ! !

Two days ago i decided to do a braid out in my hair (check out my other blog to get the whole story). It was cute and I loved it.

THEENNNN! like an hour after I posted that blog I got a call from target saying that they want me to go to an interview today at 1:30 today. So as much as I loved my funky-curly braid out, I had to flat iron it to have a more 'professional look' and I'm worried that my hair won't get straight enough. :/
My sister already works at target and she told me there are three interviews. If I get to the third interview then I know I got the job.
I'll tell you how it goes when I get back from the interview.
PRAY FOR MEEE!!!

Fitness Fact or Fiction?

Fitness Fact or Fiction?

intresting stuff that I never knew about exercising. things like exercising 'improves your ability to learn' and crunches doesn't help you get flat abs. click on the link and tell me what you think. (lol--rhyming)

videos and basketball

today I uploaded my first youtube video. even though i've had my youtube account since 2007, I'm just now using it. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page you'll get to watch me w/o leaving the page! (cool, right?) right now, my videos are a little rough but once i get more comfortable in front of the camera and learn how to edit them they'll be alot better for sure.
Also, LeBron's going to Miami Heat! I'm not a big sports fan- but I do know that with LeBron, Wade and Bosh all on one team--Its a wrap. its for sure that their going to win the playoffs. Eventhough their going to be the 'dream team', i think its going to be a boring season b/c whenever heat plays someone you automatically know whose going to win.

Seventeen Magazine Fitness Schedule.

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I was trying to get into shape. 17mag just came out with a new 6-week fitness routine that I'm going to give a try. So far what i've been doing is cardio and yoga. Doing yoga is a good way to slowly bring your heart rate down and still work out. For cardio, one day I took my dog for a walk for about 15 minutes. Yesterday It was raining so I ran inside with the Wii Fit for 10 minutes.
What I like about this routine is that it's different from the other 'routines' i've tried. Most times i would get on the floor and do a lot of crunches then turn over and do some pushups and that would last me less than ten minutes. But this routine tells me how long to do things for so my work outs aren't as short and useless.
The hardest thing about working out for me is pushing myself. If I'm doing crunches or pushups and something starts to hurt i'll stop and give myself a couple of seconds to rest instead of working through the pain. Working through the pain is what usually gets you the results you want and thats something I'm going to work on.

Fitness Tip:
Your abs are just like your biceps: to make them stronger and tighter, you don't need to do 500 reps. Instead, try grabbing a 3-5lb weight. Place behind your head or on your chest and do one set of eight to fifteen sit-ups, working up to more sets as you get stronger.

Videos!

hi! i've been trying to make videos about the things that i want to talk about because i feel it would be more personal. BUT- the camera that i have is making it difficult to make videos b/c when i talk, it sounds like i have a stopped up nose or that i don't talk clear and as far as i know i talk pretty clear b/c not too many ppl have to ask for clarification when i talk. I want this to be a written blog and also a vlog. So I hope that'll be true one day--i just have to learn to talk on camera. :)

Join Mee! *Fitness

Lately i've been trying to work out more. normally i work out at home (sit ups, pushups or running with the wii fit), but now i've been trying to get out more and work-out outside. last week i went for a run (i'm never doing that again--its supposed to get up to 92 degrees!!!), but yesterday i went for a 40 minute walk around the neighborhood and i hope to continue to work towards my goal of flat abs, thinner theighs, and stronger arms.
jsyk- i'm not going off of pounds b/c
a)- the scale doesn't work
b)- its not about how much you weigh, its about how you feel.
However, when it gets really hot outside like it did today, i still do enjoy working out indoors. My favoriate thing to do is to go on youtube and search "learn to dance" and dance do the dance moves that the instructer teaches me. it's a great workout thats fun and free.
or you can type things like "learn to kickbox", or "learn karate". They all help alot.

1 year later...

okay..last year i decided to make like..3 entries and gave up. now i'm more determined to make this blog great! being 16 i've matured a lot during my first year at an actual high school.-
(long story short: in my school district schools are set up like this:
k-5
6-7
